Rachel Johanningsmeier approaches commissioned work as a collaboration, aiming to create pieces that suit their space while reflecting her signature style—moody, energetic, and dimensional. This mural, commissioned by La Taqueria by Katsuji at Boxyard RTP, features an owl peeking through flowers. After completing the piece, Rachel learned the owl symbolized the client’s mother—a connection that added unexpected depth to the work.

Rachel Johanningsmeier grew up in Apex, North Carolina, where a small acre of land became the backdrop for a lifelong fascination with nature. Raised in a family of gymnasts alongside two sisters, she was immersed in a female-driven environment that celebrated strength and bravery. These formative influences continue to shape her work, which centers on movement, energy, and spirit. Her art pays tribute to those who balance elegance with intensity—those who remain wild at heart, bold, and untamed.
