Ecological Sustainability
Since 2017, Bee Downtown and Research Triangle Park (RTP) have nurtured a flourishing partnership. It began with the installation of two hives at Frontier RTP and expanded in 2021 with the addition of three more hives.
Bee Downtown proudly maintains 3 hives on the Frontier RTP campus and 2 at RTP HQ. Each year, our honey harvest averages around 122 pounds, with an impressive 165 pounds collected in 2024.
One of our most beloved offerings is the Hive Tour. This popular event has been a staple at the Frontier RTP campus throughout our partnership with Bee Downtown.
In 2021, we unveiled the latest artwork at the Frontier RTP apiary, celebrating the essential role honeybees play in our ecosystem. These industrious bees travel up to 3 miles from their hives, gathering nectar to produce honey and pollinate a diverse array of plants and trees.
The Frontier RTP hives are a key link in the Bee Downtown Pollinator Corridor, which spans the Triangle area. The additional hives established in 2021 extended this corridor to cover over 60 flight miles, making it the largest single-management pollinator system in the United States.
