Made by You: Sketching the Living World

In this workshop, we will observe local plant life and learn how to identify plants through sketching practices.

Leaves, Lines & Wonder

Plant life surrounds us and is integral to our survival, culture, and heritage. Together we will practice the art of observation—a meditative process that encourages calm, focus, and steadiness in the midst of a busy day. Students will learn how to build drawings from simple shapes, add line and value to create form, and develop thoughtful compositions on their sketchbook pages.

We will also explore ways to incorporate journaling alongside our drawings. By the end of the workshop, each student will begin developing a botanical sketchbook that serves as a living journal—documenting both personal identity and the local flora around us.

About the Artist

A botanical artist, producing detailed works in graphite, ink, colored pencil, and watercolor, Ana Carolina loves to capture plant life in an effort to deepen the connection between her viewers and the plants that surround them. Her largely monochromatic plant portraits invite viewers into a quiet, contemplative engagement with the natural world. Ana Carolina’s deep connection to botanicals is rooted in her heritage and upbringing, informing both the subject matter and sensibility of her practice.

Ana Carolina’s teaching draws on our shared human history with plants, particularly the traditions rooted in Indigenous knowledge and the role of the medicine man or woman within a community. As a South American with strong Indigenous roots, she carries a heritage deeply connected to traditional plant remedies and respect for the healing wisdom of the natural world.
